"One in a Million"

Course Description

This course is specifically designed for students who have a strong basis in the usage of the English language. Students will explore various essential questions and read corresponding fiction and non-fiction texts to aid in answering those questions. They will study the literary elements and non-fiction text features in each piece while becoming more skillful readers, writers, speakers, and listeners. Finally, students will enhance their critical thinking skills that will help them achieve success inside and outside of the classroom.

Course Objectives

Students will:

  1. Increase analytical skills through close-readings, guided reading activities, independent reading, and partner/class discussions.

  2. Enhance synthesizing skills by studying and analyzing historical context and/or paired passages.

  3. Develop writing skills through various creative, reflective and analytical writing assignments.

  4. Hone public speaking abilities through frequent formal and informal presentations.

  5. Enrich vocabulary through reading and daily practice.

Grading

  • Writing- 40%

  • Assessments- 40%

  • Homework/Classwork- 20%
